We are sorry for the brief interruption in service

Travelled by train to Civitavechia (sp), which is about 75 minute from Rome - it's where our ship was waiting for us.  The ship is beautiful - and not too big.  Couldn't get onto the internet via our PC - even the resident geek couldn't figure out why... but (obviously) got that resolved today by opening the drawer in the desk - and USING THE COMPUTER THAT COMES WITH THE ROOM.  (d'OH).

We explored the ship yesterday (it's really lovely); enjoyed a sumptuous meal (the food, as promised, is VERY good - it better be with Jacques Pepin as the Chef d'cuisine, right?).  Around 8 or so the ship sailed out of port and headed south to Sorrento, on the Amalfi Coast. A stunningly beautiful town.

After breakfast we visited Hereculean - a city that was buried under 50 feet of volcanic mud when Vesuvius erupted in AD 79.  In spite of the unbearable heat, the tour was incredible.  Unlike Pompeii, this site showed how people actually lived.  Here a pic of the site, with Mt. Vesuvius lurking in the background.  It remains the most dangerous volcanoe in the world - still very active, and there are now 700,000 people living in the blast zone.
